“Famous Persons and Papers of the Second Millennium:
Series 3

#11) Divine Authority by Scripture Only:

The Magna Carta presented to King John by the Barons of England in arms in 1215, secured in writing the ancient liberties of the English People. The translation of the Holy Scriptures into the native language of the people of England by Wycliffe and Tyndale in 1388 and 1525 respectively, confirmed in writing the validity before Almighty God of their defense of these rights and allowed the claim of Divine Authority to be weighed by the citizens in light of the Bible. As the reading of the Bible itself in their own tongue became more widespread, the citizens were instructed in what constitutes good government as well as good citizenship.

#12) Luther’s 95 Theses:

There is a Third Document which combined with the Magna Carta and the Bible to become the foundation and springboard of the mighty events which followed. This was Martin Luther’s posting of his Ninety-Five Theses on the Church Door in Wittenberg, Germany. Date: October 31,1517, (A date observed historically and throughout the Protestant world as Reformation Day.) This essentially was a challenge to a public debate on the ninety-five issues listed. Martin Luther was born in Eislebin, Germany in 1483. At age of 24, he was ordained as Augustinian Priest in the Roman Catholic Church. IN 1512 he became Professor at University of Wittenberg. The next few years he studied with great soul-searching comparing the Bible teachings with the Church teachings.

#13) The Sound of the Hammer:

The 1517 arrival in Wittenberg of the Dominican Monk, Johann Tetzell, to preach the sale of indulgences (to raise money for rebuilding St. Peter’s Church at Rome) aroused Luther who was disturbed, not only by the abuses connected with the sale or granting of indulgences but also, by the lack of Biblical authority. When the sound of Martin Luther’s hammer echoed down in the streets of town he had no thought of a schism in the Church but this act came to be regarded as the beginning of the Reformation. In 1520 Pope Leo X issued a bull (law) condemning Luther’s doctrine. Luther publicly burned the bull and he was excommunicated.

#14) Down through the Centuries:

PL Sturgis: “From Wycliffe’s first English translation from Latin Vulgate to Tyndale’s translation back to original Hebrew Old Testament and original Greek from the early church with apostle Paul, now Martin Luther rebels against the corruption of the Church of Rome in the dark times of the 16th century. Now, from the time Luther was excommunicated. (kicked out of the church)”----- Quoting Carris Kocher: Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor summoned Martin Luther to appear before the Church Council at Worms, Germany. Upon Luther’s refusal to recant (withdraw his views) placed him under the ban of the Empire. On his departure from Worms, Germany, Luther’s friends made a daring capture and hid him away for about a year. Like Wycliffe and Tyndale, Luther, out of love for his countrymen, and his God, translated the Bible in his native tongue. He died in 1546 in his bed victorious over sin, the world, the flesh, the devil, and the Pope. The sound of his hammer echoes throughout the world and down through the centuries.

#15) Historical Foundations:

The Glorious Historical Trilogy --- “The Magna Carta”...”The Bible” and “The Ninety Five Theses” ... became the foundation for several other historical events which, likewise, were of great consequence for the good of mankind. 1620, The Mayflower Compact--- this well-known Document was drawn up by the Pilgrims on November 11,1620, while still on the Mayflower Ship. Storms at sea had landed them far north of Virginia, their original destination. With winter setting in there was no time to travel south and among some of the strangers on board, there were rumblings of doing as they pleased once on shore. the ship had landed outside the legal boundaries of the Virginia Colony and there was no legally enforceable government. Thus, the Birth of the Mayflower Compact, drafted by men of wisdom and foresight, was a foundation stone in the history of American self-government under God.
