Yankees, Flyers Dump Kate Smith’s “God Bless America”
Back in 1939, Kate Smith recorded a stirring rendition of God Bless America — it later became a mainstay of the seventh inning stretch at Yankee Stadium after the 2001 terrorist attacks.
The Philadelphia Flyers invited the famed singer to perform the song in 1969 and was so well-loved she was invited back several times. There’s even a statue of the famed singer near the Wells Fargo Center.
