“Famous Persons and Papers of the Second Millennium:
Series 5
#21) Endowed by our Creator:
The Magna Carta declared the rights of man. The Holy Bible confirmed the rights of man were indeed endowed to mankind by his Creator. the Protestant Reformation led to the establishment of “One Nation Under God.” A nation singularly and eminent for Glory and for beauty, where the rights of mankind were secured to him by the founders, citizens, and soldiers of his country. July 4,1776, by the document, “The Declaration of Independence” the United States of America declared that mankind was endowed by His Creator with certain unalienable (unchanging) rights in the Document presented to the world announcing her independence. September 17,1787=== March 4,1789: The Constitution of the United States confirmed the founder’s belief in the inherent rights of mankind and set forth a framework of government most suitable to the protection and preservation of these rights. The Document was completed in 1787, adopted by the states, and the form of government agreed to for the Union of the States was set in motion on March 4,1789. December 15,1791: The Bill of Rights, the first Ten Amendments to the Constitution were approved by the necessary number of the states. The important addition referred to other rights unspecified are reserved to the people and the states.
#22) Three Magnificent Documents:
These three magnificent Documents, together and individually, are the living embodiment of the precepts contained in the Magna Carta, The Holy Bible, and the Protestant Reformation. These Documents formed the loveliest pavilion on the face of the earth for a happy, free and prosperous people. Thus, we Americans have been Blessed to dwell in a most Blessed Country! To whom are we indebted as instruments in the hand of an All-Wise and Good God for the security of Liberty and property which we have enjoyed. Pearl’s Poem: How do we spell LIBERTY? Lord help US understand. Take it to our leaders to proclaim throughout the Land. Help us spell it in a way that’s clear to every man!---- L is for our only Lord. Besides Him there is none. I means, in His Image, He created everyone! B stands for the Bible, for the Word of God made flesh! E means Every knee shall bow and Every tongue confess! R means Righteousness exalts a nation such as ours! T means Teach what Jesus Taught...for He has given power! Y is for each Yearning heart that Yields to God’s command...to keep proclaiming LIBERTY throughout our troubled Land!
#23) The Magna Carta of American Liberty:
Are we not commanded to give honor where honor is due? Is not a grateful heart well pleasing to God? On June 7,1776 the Continental Congress in Philadelphia adopted a resolution looking to the complete independence of the American States. A committee of five was appointed. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and R.W. Livingston. Thomas Jefferson was regarded as the chairman and to him was committed the duty of preparing the declaration. Without reference to book or document the great Virginian drafted the Declaration of Independence, which has well been called, “The Magna Carta of American Liberty.” After review by the committee, it was presented to Congress.
#24) Honorable Mentions:
Next to Jefferson, more than to any other member of congress, we are indebted to John Adams. He had long been a part of colonial opposition to the aggression of Great Britain. His foresight in the unfolding political events is striking and his correspondence of the time evidences his realization of the inevitability of independence. A third individual whose name along with George Washington’s , noticeably absent from the Declaration, is Patrick Henry. Washington, of course, was serving as Commander and Chief of the Continental Army, having been appointed by congress in June 1775. But where was Patrick Henry? On May 14,1776, the Virginia convention considered a resolution in Patrick Henry’s handwriting to declare the union between Virginia and Great Britain dissolved and proposing that congress be asked to make for all the colonies a clear and full Declaration of Independence. Virginia’s Declaration of Independence was adopted May 16,1776.
#25) The Virginia Bill of Rights:
The following day that Virginia’s Declaration of Independence was enacted, May 17,1776, George Mason wrote Patrick Henry: “I congratulate you most sincerely, on the accomplishment which I know was the warmest wish of your heart, the establishment of American Independence and the liberty of our country. .. A plan of government including 16 Articles of the Virginia Bill of Rights was adopted on June 29.1776, and Patrick Henry was sworn in on July 6,1776, as the first elected governor under a written Constitution of a sovereign State in the world. On October 22,1780, George Washington wrote to George Mason: “If we mean to continue our struggle the amplest powers must be lodged in congress as head of the Federal Union adequate to all purposes of war. Unless these things are done our efforts will be in vain.
One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors. -- Plato (429-347 BC)
