#1) Introduction:
Carris Kocher is a homeschooling mother, historian and more. When I met her personally with phone conversation she had ordered my “Pilgrims Path to Freedom” brochure that was published by Ann Neaman for God and Country out of Wheatland, Virginia. She told me she was chairperson of the Bill of Rights Banquet which took place annually since 1976 and continues . She homeschools her 8 children and is involved in many projects to save America. Here is what she wrote on front cover: “It is hoped that these brief sketches will awaken further interests in events which so affected the last one thousand years and gave hope to mankind throughout the entire world. From the Barons of England and the Magna Carta to the Founding Fathers and the American Declaration of Independence. From Wycliffe and Tyndale’s translations of the Bible to Martin Luther’s 95 theses; from Oliver Cromwell and the death warrant for King Charles 1st to William and Mary and the Bill of Rights: from the Pilgrims and the Mayflower Compact to our United States Constitution and our Bill of Rights; These Documents and persons significantly affected the course of history in the last millennium. An earnest examination of their words and deeds and the consequences will help us as we embark upon a new millennium. May we be the wiser for it. (to be continued) The Great Charter:

William Penn called it “The Great Charter”... that magnificent charter of the civil and religious rights of Englishmen and thus Americans. On June 15,1215 AD, in a meadow known as Runnymede on the Thames River in Surrey, England, the proud and haughty King John yielded his claim to absolute power and begrudgingly signed the Document presented to him by the Barons of his Kingdom. His former invasions of those ancient and just liberties had evidenced to the world that he would not do so willingly. Therefore the Barons, to secure their liberties and properties for themselves and their posterity, gave the king two choices. Either he signs the Great Charter or they would take up arms against him. He chose to sign although it soon became evident that neither his heart nor his head was in agreement with his hand. Steven Langton, Archbishop of Canterbury was a strong supporter of the baron’s cause and his name is the first subscribed as witness of the Magna Carta . when the Pope excommunicated the Barons for such determined opposition to arbitrary power Langton refused to publish the ban. In 1297 King Edward 1st published “A Confirmation of the Charters and Liberties of England and of the Forest” to declare to the people that we have confirmed them in all points. If any judgment be given against the points of the Charter it shall be undone and holden for nought. He furthermore required that all the justices, sheriffs, and other officers throughout the realm should cause the Charter to be published to their respective localities. Then, wonder of wonders, he commanded that the Charter be sent under the King’s seal to Cathedral Churches throughout the realm and there to remain and to be read before the people two times every year. Can you imagine what would happen today if the Churches were demanded to read our Declaration of Independence from their pulpits every July 4th and the Bill of Rights every December 15th? Many mistakenly consider the Magna Carta to be the beginning of English liberties. Not so! These rights and liberties, properties and privileges, were so ancient that it was considered the undoubted Birthright of every Englishmen: the inheritance of inheritances.: To quote William Penn again: “The English people had historically obligated their king to observe the ancient fundamental laws and free customs of this land. (Saxon Laws 712 AD to 11oo AD translated by Lambard) This obligation remained basically unquestioned until the reign of King John who thought his will should be the Supreme Law of the Land. However, the incensed Barons of that time betook themselves to a vigorous defense of their ancient rights and liberties. (to be continued) Along Comes King John:

The Magna Carta became the Yoke and muzzle which failed not to disable many raging bears from entering the Pleasant Vineyard of English Freedom. It is the very image and expression of justice, liberty, and property: (William Penn): These laws were God-given and well intact before King John decided to become the Supreme law. PL Sturgis: We read in Deuteronomy 32 the Song of Moses: Give ear and hear O earth! I will publish the Name of the Lord. They have corrupted themselves. They are a crooked generation. Do ye thus requite the Lord? Remember the days of old. Ask thy fathers. But Jeshurun waxed fat and forsook his God. Along comes the King, though his name be not John, he has lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.
