As Sen. Kamala D. Harris neared being selected as Joe Biden’s 2020 running mate, there was one issue thought to be an obstacle: Her previous broadside against Biden’s past position on busing. It was a brutal attack that registered in the polls in a way few debate moments have. Adding fuel to the speculation, a report indicated that a lead member of Biden’s vice-presidential search committee, former senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), recently complained that Harris had “no remorse” for the attack.

In the days after Hillary Clinton’s defeat, the two people who seemed like the Democratic Party’s most obvious 2020 candidates, then-Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, hinted that Clinton had gone too far in talking about issues of identity. “It is not good enough for somebody to say, ‘I’m a woman; vote for me,’” Sanders said. Other liberals lamented that the party had lost white voters in such states as Ohio and Iowa who had supported Barack Obama, and they said Democrats needed to dial back the identity talk to win them back.

Stumbling, Bumbling Kamala

Ooh-la-la!, oui, oui!  Kamala Harris has finally gone to Europe — and at taxpayers' expense.  Yet despite CNN's glowing description of the "chumming chemistry" between the vice president and France's President Emmanuel Macron that "signaled a relationship back on track" after the canceled submarine contract crisis, the meeting did little by way of burnishing the vice president's image.

Of course, nobody who has seen Kamala hovering behind the president like a straddle-legged, uniformed prison guard would expect her to sweep onto the continental scene with the same panache as, say, a Jackie Kennedy or Princess Di — and certainly not swathed in the same head-turning, headlining haute couture.  Nor does Kamala, pantsuits notwithstanding, generate the same interest as someone like Hillary Clinton.
