Trey Gowdy says he would turn down attorney general job if asked
The nation was stunned in January when South Carolina’s Rep. Trey Gowdy, a prominent Republican, said he would not seek reelection in 2018.

Gowdy is holding firm on his decision to leave the Capitol, saying that there is yet another job he would not take if asked: attorney general.

Not Interested

Gowdy said he wished to return to the justice system when he announced he would not seek re-election in November. But when Maria Bartiromo on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures asked him if he would consider taking the attorney general position if Jeff Sessions was ousted and President Donald Trump asked him, Gowdy didn’t hesitate.

“I would tell the president, with all due respect, that he can do a lot better than me,” Gowdy told her.

Gowdy added that, in the current political environment, he would have a tough time getting through a confirmation hearing if he did take the job, after serving eight years as a high profile Republican in Congress.

“I would advise him to pick a woman or a man who has a career in law enforcement who has never donated to a political campaign and never run for public office before,” Gowdy said. “There are lots of good people not named Trey that he ought to look at.”

A New Special Counsel?

Gowdy also discussed the corruption in the Justice Department in his interview with Bartiromo, noting that he believes another special counsel may be needed to investigate the department’s handling of how it obtained a warrant under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, against a campaign aide of now-President Trump.

Gowdy mocked the Democrat’s counter-memo, issued in response to the explosive memo created by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), which detailed abuses in the FISA warrant process. “You know, Maria, this Democrat memo makes me smile,” Gowdy said. “If it were up to Adam Schiff [D-Calif.]…it would have been a haiku, and not a memo, because he did everything he could to keep us from finding out any of the information that was in either one of those memos.”

Gowdy added:

Congress has proven itself incapable of investigating this FISA abuse. DOJ should not be looking into it. We need an independent arbiter that’s either the inspector general or special counsel.
“It May Be Unavoidable”

He told Bartiromo that he does not want to call for another special counsel, but believes it may be “unavoidable.” Gowdy said he trusts DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz, but is concerned about his limitations. He continued:

Maria, over the weekend, I’d counted up almost two dozen witnesses that the inspector general would not have access to, were he alone conducting this investigation, so I think we’re trending, perhaps, toward another special counsel because of this unique fact pattern and the fact that there are witnesses outside the reach of the inspector general.

“Horowitz is a fair guy, but when there are two dozen witnesses that have left the department or worked for another agency, someone else has to do it,” Gowdy said, “and I am reluctant to call for special counsel, but I think it may be unavoidable in this fact pattern.”
