AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL…IN OTHER WORDS

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL…IN OTHER WORDS

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL…IN OTHER WORDS ... By: Mike Sackett

Here is my take on AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL, an inspired tribute by the great American poetess, Katharine Lee Bates, to the greatest country ever conceived by the mind of man:

  • Katharine’s words:
O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain!
  • In other words:

God gave us an entire continent to conduct a great American experiment. Fly on eagle’s wings to see it and feel awe at the beauty of His gift.

  • Katharine’s words:
America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!
  • In other words:

Grace is found in the American way of life; God, family, fertile soil to grow our food and industrious people to facilitate our prosperity. Goodness is a state of mind and brotherhood is the stuff of great nations, the glue that transforms weak and quarreling hyphenated-Americans into strong and confident Americans.

  • Katharine’s words:
O beautiful for pilgrim feet, Whose stern impassion’d stress A thoroughfare for freedom beat Across the wilderness! America! America! God mend thine ev’ry flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law!
  • In other words:

A Pilgrimage is a sacred mission and those who take it are blessed and cursed by the same virtues and imperfections that are common to all humans. But as our numbers grew and our civilization began spreading across the continent, America’s Founding Fathers listened to the better angels of their nature by asserting our God-given rights, ending slavery and striving for equal justice under law.

  • Katharine’s words:
O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife, Who more than self their country loved, And mercy more than life! America! America! May God thy gold refine Till all success be nobleness, And every gain divine!
  • In other words:

From its inception, God has blessed our nation with 24 karat heroes, men and women willing to put themselves in harm’s way for love of America. Their courage and nobility enables the rest of us to pursue the American Dream and as that realization sinks in, it should make us humble before God.

  • Katharine's words:
O Beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years Thine alabaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!
  • In other words:

God and our Founding Fathers intended the alabaster city known as our nation’s capital to be a beacon in a dark and moonless world, not a fetid swamp of corruption and self-interest. God’s grace and the innate goodness of WE THE PEOPLE are struggling against the America haters to restore our nation, Make America Great Again and promote brotherhood from sea to shining sea.

You're a Grand Old Flag by George M. Cohan You're a grand old flag, You're a high flying flag And forever in peace may you wave. You're the emblem of The land I love. The home of the free and the brave. Ev'ry heart beats true 'neath the Red, White and Blue, Where there's never a boast or brag. Should auld acquaintance be forgot, Keep your eye on the grand old flag. You're a grand old flag, You're a high flying flag And forever in peace may you wave. You're the emblem of The land I love. The home of the free and the brave. Ev'ry heart beats true 'neath the Red, White and Blue, Where there's never a boast or brag. Should auld acquaintance be forgot, Keep your eye on the grand old flag.
