This is no witch hunt
The May 1 news article “GOP lawmakers draft impeachment articles against Rosenstein” mentioned that the Trump administration and many Republicans are growing restless about what they call a “witch hunt.” Their misuse of this phrase and the fact that it is gaining traction calls to mind George Orwell’s classic novel “1984,” in which such redefinition of words was a cornerstone of the totalitarian society he depicted.
A “witch hunt” entails guilt by association or, in the case of the Salem witch trials, the use of “spectral” evidence. While the investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign is exploring associations, those associations have not resulted in conclusions, let alone charges — a far cry from the “witch hunt” of communists in the late 1940s and 1950s, during which conclusions and job dismissals were often based solely on associations. Likewise, the investigations into obstruction of justice have sought ascertainable (as opposed to, in one form or another, spectral) acts of obstruction.
