DHS Reveals Russia Infiltrated U.S. Grid 150 Times, Obama Admin ‘Stand Down’ Order Questioned
The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that Russian government-connected actors could have hacked into electric utilities across the United States, according to a bombshell new report from The Wall Street Journal.
Many users online have noted that former President Barack Obama’s administration gave a “stand down” order in 2016 and refused to take any action amid Russian hacking attempts, which raises serious questions.
A spokesman for DHS revealed that the shadowy Russian groups are operating under the names Dragonfly and Energetic Bear. These two groups, DHS says, infiltrated electric networks in America with relative ease.
The Journal notes that DHS began warning that American utilities and infrastructures were vulnerable to Russian meddling in Dec. 2014.
Between 2010 and 2014, DHS reported that Russian hackers infiltrated the Department of Energy’s computer system more than 150 times.

Here’s what DHS Chief of Industrial-Control-System Analysis, Jonathan Homer, told the Journal:
“They got to the point where they could have thrown switches and affect the flow of power.
“They’ve been intruding into our networks and are positioning themselves for a limited or widespread attack. They are waging a covert war on the West.”
The report raises a bevy of questions, many of which revolve around why the Obama administration failed to take serious actions for eight years to protect America’s infrastructure and make it clear to Russia that such attack on the U.S. will never be tolerated.
DHS warns that Russia is making attempts to hack the United States’ electric grid remotely, which would have catastrophic effects on the nation if successful.
DHS said it is working diligently to check all systems and ensure they are all protected, but the report underscores how the Obama administration apparently failed to take any actions for many years, leaving the Trump administration with another major issue to fix.
