A LETTER TO MY FELLOW AMERICAN PATRIOTS

Dear Fellow American,

During recent events in politics, I've seen a recurring theme from the Progressive movement. The Left insists that the government designed by our Founding Fathers, as expressed in the Constitution, is flawed and outdated

The Federalist Papers

How should defenders of the Constitution respond to such charges?

Well, a few early defenders of the Constitution–Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison–have given us the guide: The Federalist Papers. Written between October 1787 and August 1788 under the pen name Publius, The Federalist Papers were originally published as newspaper editorials intended to explain the merits of the Constitution.

Thomas Jefferson described The Federalist Papers as "the best commentary on the principles of government which ever was written."
There is no better aid in understanding the principles of liberty underlying our Constitution than the words of the Founders themselves

The Federalist Papers

Beginning on October 27, 1787, the Federalist Papers were first published in the New York press under the signature of "Publius". These papers are generally considered to be one of the most important contributions to political thought made in America. The essays appeared in book form in 1788, with an introduction by Hamilton. Subsequently, they were printed in many editions and translated into several languages. The pseudonym "Publius" was used by three men: Jay, Madison, and Hamilton. Jay was responsible for only a few of the 85 articles. The papers were meant to be influential in the campaign for the adoption of the Constitution by New York State. But the authors not only discussed the issues of the constitution, but also many general problems of politics.

Ask yourself as you read and analyze the Federalist Papers if you are convinced by the arguments that are presented. Obviously, they convinced the people of 1789 and the Constitution has existed from that point as the longest-lasting, most durable national Constitution, but the people of each age have to be sufficiently convinced as well as put the arguments to new tests, construct new arguments, and propose more appropriate adaptions.
