Manafort Judge Deals Blow To Probe Will Reveal Immunity List
The judge said that he will provide immunity, but that the list of people Mueller wants to provide said immunity will also be revealed.
Last week, the Robert Mueller special investigation asked a judge overseeing the criminal case against Paul Manafort, Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, to grant immunity to five individuals, and to hide their names from the public. In a stunning blow, the judge, a Ronald Reagan appointee, gave the special investigation what they wanted, but not entirely.
Judge T.S. Ellis III, who was appointed by President Reagan, granted the Mueller prosecution team the immunity that they requested for the five individuals. However, in a stunning blow for the witch hunt, he also said that they would have to identify the people to the defense and to the public. While immunity is still an issue on many levels, at least Mueller didn’t get everything he wanted in this pathetic scheme.
In a filing last week, the Mueller team begged the judge to conceal the identity of the five individuals granted immunity, saying that failing to do so would leave them open to ‘undue harassment’ from the general public. Perhaps he fears that the guilty people would be exposed?
The special investigators also said that the five individuals should remain unidentified because, as of yet, they had not been criminally charged. Of course, now they won’t be charged at all.
Judge Ellis III, however, decided otherwise, and the even ordered Mueller’s office to turn over a list of nearly 30 witnesses to Manafort’s legal team.
Currently, the former manager of the Donald J. Trump campaign is the most high-ranking individual to be charged by the special investigators. His ‘crimes’ took place years before the campaign began.
Most of the charges that the group has produced targeted companies or individuals living in Russia, who are not likely to ever face the indictments produced by the investigators.
In a strange twist, the only one to answer to the indictment of various Russian individuals and organizations, Concord Management and Consulting, managed to show that the indictment targeting their company, and the second company with a similar name, was little more than a political ploy.
When they took on the Mueller legal team in the courts, it turned out that the team either didn’t have evidence, or didn’t want to turn it over. When a judge ordered the team to turn over whatever evidence they had of wrongdoing on the part of Concord Management, they turned over multiple terabytes of untranslated social media messages from Russia.
The charges against Manafort, on the other hand, aren’t even alleged to have anything to do with the claims of collusion between the Donald Trump 2016 presidential campaign and Russia’s government.
The charges come from work that he did, along with the Podesta Group, on behalf of Viktor Yanukovych, a pro-Russian politician who was in charge of Ukraine.
According to the investigators, he failed to register as a lobbyist for a foreign agent, and he also hid the money that he was paid for his work, then laundered it to avoid paying taxes on it.
Why is the Mueller special investigation team going after crimes that have nothing to do with the allegations of ‘Russian collusion’ that seems to persist, even without any sort of evidence?
Possibly because they need a win. There’s also the chance that, as Alan Dershowitz suggested, they’re hoping that Manafort will fold at the end, and will offer to testify against President Trump, or even to make things up about the President, in order to save himself from a federal prison sentence.
Most interesting of all is the rumor that one of the five individuals who Mueller requested immunity for was Tony Podesta.
Tony Podesta, brother of Hillary Clinton campaign confidant John Podesta, was the head of the Podesta Group when it worked for Yanukovych. In essence, Paul Manafort worked for them.
Tony Podesta and his Group never changed their paperwork to show that they were representing Ukraine nor its leader. In other words, he’s guilty of almost the exact same thing as the guy he would be testifying against.
This suggests that there may be a political motivation for allowing one person to get off but not the other. In fact, the major difference between the two is that one decided to back President Donald J. Trump, who won the election, and the other backed former Secretary of State Clinton, the ‘deep state’ establishment candidate who lost the electoral college vote.
Judge Ellis will rule on the question of whether or not he will approve a delay later in the day. For now, those interested can only wait to see who the five names are, or if Mueller would rather withdraw the five names from consideration.
