Bannon Calls on McConnell to Resign, Dismisses NJ, VA, NYC Losses

Bannon Calls on McConnell to Resign, Dismisses NJ, VA, NYC Losses
Breitbart News executive and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to resign and dismissed the effect of widespread Republican losses this week.
Bannon said that it would be hard for tax reform to come to fruition if McConnell resigned immediately, but said the 75-year-old should "tender his resignation after we get taxes done."
He said McConnell isn't showing urgency in passing dozens of bills the House has given him to send to President Trump.
He also said McConnell is appearing to hold off on holding votes on things that would be "difficult" for Trump-state Democrats to vote against ahead of the 2018 midterms.
"There needs to be a sense of urgency in the Senate," he said.
"We started a Civil War... against the Republican establishment. That's how Eric Cantor (R-Va.) got blown out, that's how John Boehner (R-Ohio) got sent home."
Bannon added that Attorney General Jeff Sessions should assign a special counsel to probe Clinton involvement with Russia and the Uranium One deal.
He said that the other option would be that Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) open an investigation as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
On the 2017 off-year elections, Bannon said that Democratic victories in Virginia, New Jersey and New York were not a referendum on Trump.
In Virginia, Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam (D) beat Republican Ed Gillespie, and saw dozens of other seats go to the Democrats.
In New Jersey, former Goldman Sachs executive Phil Murphy (D) emerged victorious over Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno (R).
And, in New York, two major Downstate races went to the Democrats, with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) winning reelection, and George Latimer (D) upsetting popular incumbent Rob Astorino (R) in the Westchester County Executive contest.
"What we had [in Virginia] was an establishment candidate in Ed Gillespie," he said, adding that Gillespie narrowly defeated Prince William County supervisor Corey Stewart (R) in his primary.
Bannon, who is from Norfolk, said Stewart claimed the mantle of Donald Trump in the gubernatorial primary and that Gillespie came up short because he did not similarly embrace Trump.
"Virginia because of Northern Virginia is a blue state," he said. "Gillespie needed to embrace Trump more."
