About this Book: “The King Nobody Wanted tells the story of Jesus. Where the actual words from the Bible are used they are from the King James Version. The greater part of the story is told in everyday words. You will certainly want to look up these stories in your own Bible.
The King Nobody Wanted: written by Norman F. Langford: SERIES 5
#1) On the Jericho road:
The months passed by and soon it was time to go to Jerusalem again. Jesus and His disciples came first to the city of Jericho where beautiful gardens grew and palm trees stood tall. All travelers loved to stop at Jericho before they took the hard and lonely road that led to Jerusalem. There were desert lands and hills ahead of them but at Jericho there was water to drink and food to eat. It was a comfortable place to stay but Jesus was going to Jerusalem and nothing could hold Him back. The people at Jericho heard that Jesus was passing through the city and a crowd gathered in the street to catch a glimpse of Him as He passed by. There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was short and could not see Jesus because of the crowd. No one liked him because he was a tax collector. He grew rich helping the Romans collect taxes. The Jews called Zacchaeus a cheat and a traitor. Nevertheless, he wanted to see Jesus so he climbed a sycamore tree. High above the street he could look down at Jesus but there was no reason to think that Jesus would look up at him. However, when Jesus reached the place where Zacchaeus was hiding in the branches He stopped. Jesus knew who this man was. “Hurry down Zacchaeus. I’m coming to your house today.” Jesus told him. Surprised but happy, Zacchaeus scrambled down from the tree and led Jesus to his house. The crowd was not happy to see that. They murmured among themselves: “Jesus will be the guest of that miserable traitor.” But Zacchaeus became a changed man that very day. He gave half his money to the poor and paid back everyone he had cheated 4 fold. This is what Jesus came for. He was glad the rich man loved God more than his money. Jesus knew when He got to Jerusalem it would cost Him a great deal to help His people find a new life but whatever it cost would be worth the price.
#2) Going to the Temple:
Pass Over time had almost come so the town of Jericho was left behind. Jesus and His disciples pushed across the hills and desert lands that lay east of Jerusalem. This was the country Jesus had crossed with His parents when He was twelve years old. The land was just as dreary and the desert was just as dry; yet the Pilgrims would burst into song: “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the House of the Lord. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. They shall prosper that love thee.” the Pass Over Pilgrims were pouring through the Gate and up to Jerusalem. It was hard for the big crowd to find a place to stay in the city for the week of the Pass Over. A man named Simon, whom Jesus had cured of leprosy, had a place in Bethany and welcomed Jesus and His disciples to stay with him. Also, the woman who angered the pharisees by pouring the rich ointment on Jesus lived in Bethany. She came to Simon’s house. But this time it was not the pharisees who were angry with her. It was Jesus’ own disciple named Judas Iscariot. “Why was not the ointment sold and given to the poor?” Judas demanded! He did not care about the poor. He collected the money for Jesus and the disciples while secretly helping himself out with what should have belonged to all of them. When Jesus heard some of the disciples complaining about Mary’s gift to Him, He told them it is good that Mary anointed Him for His burial. They did not understand. (they thought He would be King now) Jesus grew lonelier everyday but the Hardest task was still ahead. the worst of all the disciples was Judas Iscariot. He was planning something terrible. Jesus was the only one who knew what Judas was planning.
#3) A hard Task:
Jesus kept waiting and hoping His disciples would understand. There was very little time left. There was something He had to do now. Back in the days when He was all alone in the wilderness, after John baptized Him in the Jordan, He knew that is what He would have to do someday. Now the time had come. He must go back to the Temple. He must go and get ready for the Passover. Jerusalem was 20 miles away from Bethany. He must go to Jerusalem at once! Jesus called two of His Disciples and asked them to go into the village. “There you will find a young donkey tied. No one has ever ridden it. Untie it and bring it to Me.” the disciples went to do what they were told. They knew Jesus would ride the donkey into Jerusalem as the Messiah. They thought Jesus was riding in to claim the Throne and be their King. A King must ride in comfort so they put cloths on the donkey’s back. Others spread cloths out on the street. The disciples walked ahead shouting,”Hozanna! Blessed is He that comes in the Name of the Lord.” Some cut branches from the trees and waved them before Him. It was a Royal Welcome. Only the priests and rulers were sorry to see Jesus riding in. “What can we do?” they said. “The whole world is going after Him!” They tried to trick Him into saying something that would turn the people against Him. Jesus spoke harsh words about the pharisees. “Do not be as the pharisees who wear long robes and love the best seats and expect people to bow before them!” The last story He taught in the Temple : “Someday, (Not now?) I will sit on this Throne and judge all nations. To some I will say enter for I was hungry and thirsty and naked. You gave me food and drink and clothed me. When you did this for others you did it for Me. To others I will say go away for I was hungry, thirsty and naked and you left me .” The Priests and rulers were very angry!
#4) A Murderous Plot:
The priests and rulers did not know what to do about Jesus. They hated Him but they were afraid of the Romans. What would the Roman Governor say if he heard there was another King of the Jews in Jerusalem? The priests and rulers wanted to kill Jesus. That was all they talked about but they didn’t know how it could be done. Whenever Jesus came to Jerusalem great crowds gathered around Him. It seemed to the people their Messiah had come at last. They decided they would have to do away with Jesus quietly. While they were wondering how to do it there was a knock on the door. It was one of Jesus’ disciples coming to see the rulers and priests. His name was Judas Iscariot. “What will you give me if I turn Jesus over to you?” he asked. The priests and rulers could hardly believe their ears. “Thirty pieces of silver you shall have if we find him.” So, for thirty pieces of silver Judas agreed to show them where Jesus would be when there was no crowd around Him. “Send soldiers when I tell you.” Judas instructed. “There will be His disciples there and the soldiers won’t know which one is Jesus, but I will go up to Jesus and kiss Him. The one I kiss will be the one you want to arrest. some dark night soon, in a quiet place it will be done and you will not need to worry about Jesus of Nazareth ever again.” It was a Thursday night. On Friday afternoon the lamb would be killed for the Pass Over. Jesus and His disciples were having their last meal together. Jesus told them they would all desert Him. They swore they would not but Jesus knew they would.
#5) The Last Night Together:
After the meal Jesus and His disciples came to a grove called “Gethsemane.” It was late so Jesus told His disciples to rest there on the rock while He went to pray. He took Peter, James, and John and went a little way apart from the others. Then to the three disciples with Him He said: “I am greatly troubled. Please stay awake and pray for Me? Going a few step farther Jesus fell on His knees and began to pray. “Oh My Father, if it is possible, please take this cup away from Me? Yet, not My will, but Thine be done.” When He had prayed He came back to Peter, James, and John. All three were sleeping. Twice He left to pray and returned to find them sleeping. The third time He woke them up and told them He will be turned over to sinners now. The traitor Judas Iscariot is coming. A crowd of soldiers burst into the grove carrying swords and clubs. Judas Iscariot was leading them. He ran up to Jesus and kissed Him on the cheek, saying, “Hail Master!” Jesus answered: “What have you come to do?” Then a band of men laid hands on Jesus and held Him so He could not escape. Peter was wide awake now. He cut off a man’s ear. Jesus said to Peter: “Put your sword away. My Father gave Me these things to suffer. He would save me now if I would ask Him but that is not what is supposed to be.” Then Jesus turned to the soldiers: “Have you come to arrest Me with swords and clubs as if I were a robber? Everyday I was in the Temple teaching. Why did you not arrest Me then?” The disciples could stand no more. In terror they fled away and left Jesus as He had told them they would.
