About this Book: “The King Nobody Wanted tells the story of Jesus. Where the actual words from the Bible are used they are from the King James Version. The greater part of the story is told in everyday words. You will certainly want to look up these stories in your own Bible.
The King Nobody Wanted: written by Norman F. Langford: SERIES 4
#1) About His Father’s Business:
When Jewish boys were 12 years old and knew the Hebrew language and knew the Psalms and understood the prophets and learned to obey the law ....then they were practically grown up. At this age a boy could be called a son of the law. He could go along with his parents to Jerusalem when it was Pass Over time. When Jesus was 12 years old he went with them to Jerusalem. It was a long journey from Nazareth to Jerusalem. The travelers marched and as they marched they sang “Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem...They shall prosper that love thee.” The travelers pushed through the crowded streets to the Temple on the hill. The days passed and the time had come to go home. Joseph and Mary did not see Jesus the morning they left. They did not wait to find Him. They knew that He was somewhere in the party. There were so many that they did not worry. They walked a whole day and still saw no sign of Jesus. They were frightened and turned back to Jerusalem. In the Temple the pharisees were listening to Jesus speaking. Men old enough to be His grandfather were listening to Him. Mary pushed through the crowd and took Jesus by the arm. “Your father and I have been looking for you!” Then Jesus answered: “Don’t you know I must be about my Father’s business?” They did not answer Him but waited to see what He would do. Jesus knew that someday he would go back to the Temple but He was not ready yet. He must do His duty for His parents. He must obey God at home. Then He would always know how to obey God in the wide world beyond Nazareth.
#2) John the Baptist:
When Jesus was thirty years old people began to talk about the great man who had come to Palestine. They said this man was so great that he could be the Messiah, but it was not Jesus they were talking about. It was His cousin John. John was a preacher. He was not afraid of anyone and as a result many were afraid of him. John was a rough and strong man. He wore leather and camels hair. Honey and locust was his food. Everyday he preached near the river of Jordan. The people flocked there from Jerusalem and from all over the countryside to hear him preach. It was a wild and dreary place to come to but when John preached many wanted to be there. This is how John preached: “Give up your sins and begin a new life at once. God is coming to rule over men. I am a voice crying in the wilderness. I tell you to prepare for the Lord.” When the people heard him they were afraid. Many cried out, “I have sinned” and came forward out of the crowd. John led them down the bank into the river and baptized them as a sign they wanted to be cleansed of their sins and begin a new life. Then John came to be known as John the Baptist. But when John knew a man was not honest he refused to baptize them. Some of the Pharisees and Saducees came to be baptized and John refused to baptize them. They may have been great men in Jerusalem but John called them “snakes in the grass.” That is how John the Baptist talked to the great men in Jerusalem. It made people think more than ever that he might be the Messiah. Who but the Messiah would dare talk that way to the Pharisees? But John, himself, said he was not the Messiah. “There is someone coming who is greater than I!” he told the people. “Someone whose shoe laces I am not worthy to untie. I am just preparing the way for Him.”
#3) John Baptized Jesus:
One day there was a great crowd, as usual, down by the River of Jordan. John was busy baptizing the people. As fast as they came to the water, one after another, they came. It went on for hours. John had just baptized one man and was helping him to the river’s bank when the next one was coming forward. John looked up to see who he was. He looked into the face of Jesus of Nazareth. “Not You!” ...”No!” I can not baptize You. You must baptize me instead.” John told Jesus in a hoarse whisper. Before anyone could notice what was happening, Jesus stepped into the water’s edge. “Don’t say anything about it, John.” Jesus said softly. “Treat me like everyone else. We shall all be baptized together into a new life.” Jesus went forward into the water and John baptized Him. In a moment Jesus was up the bank and lost in the crowd. The next man was coming forward as John stared after the vanishing figure of Jesus. The crowd made way for Jesus to go through. They were only thinking, “There goes another man who wanted to be cleansed from his sin.” But John said, “When I baptized Him I saw the Spirit of God come down out of Heaven like a dove and light upon Him. Jesus is the Son of God. I am nothing. He is everything. He is the Messiah! He is the Lamb of God.” As the next man came down the bank to be baptized Jesus was nowhere to be seen. John stood peering into the crowd but Jesus had gone away to be alone as God wanted Him to do.
#4) Jesus Goes into the Desert to Pray:
Jesus went into the loneliest part of the desert where there were only wild animals to keep Him company. “I AM The Messiah” He thought! “I must save my people!” There was nothing to eat in the wilderness and Jesus grew hungry. He heard a voice in his head. “If you were really the Messiah you would not be hungry. You could turn the stones to bread.” The voice did not seem to be his own. It was very quiet in the wilderness. The voice came again. “Maybe you are afraid to turn the stone to bread. If nothing happens then you are not the Messiah!” Some words from the Scriptures came into Jesus’ mind: “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word proceeding from the mouth of God.” Then the tempting voice tried again. “Prove you are the Messiah by climbing Jerusalem’s tower and jump down. Everyone knows the Messiah will come suddenly out of Heaven. God will send His angels to hold you up and nothing will happen to you.” Again Jesus thought of the Scriptures. “Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Him only shalt thou serve.” Then Jesus spok aloud: “Go away from me Satan!” Jesus knew he did not need to do any of those things Satan suggested. There was one thing He did have to do but He could not tell anyone yet. someday everyone would see what he came to earth for. someday the people would understand. Now, after 40 days in the desert, He must return to Galilee. He found the trail back to the outside world and soon he was on His way back to Galilee.
#5) Jesus Begins to Preach:
When Jesus got home to Galilee He began to preach to the people in the streets. But the crowds that heard Jesus were not as large, at first, as the crowds that heard John. Jesus began to look for followers to help Him. He went down to the sea shore and came back with four disciples. He told them He would make them fishers of men if they would follow Him. Altogether there were 12 disciples who followed Jesus. Some of the people talked against Jesus for picking publicans for disciples. Publicans were Jews that worked for the Romans. The people looked down on the publicans as betrayers to the people. They accused Jesus of eating and drinking with publicans and sinners. Jesus heard them and He replied: “It is not well people who need a doctor, but the sick. I did not come for well people’s sake.” But the Pharisees still objected. They never once thought Jesus was the Messiah. From the people he hung around with, the Pharisees did not even consider Jesus to be a good man like John the baptist. Jesus knew His listeners found it easier to hate others than to love them. He preached this to them: “You have heard it said, love your friends and hate your enemies, but I say to you to love your enemies. Bless those who curse you and pray for those who spitefully use you.”
