The God Hypothesis...HIS RETURN

Stephen Meyer On Intelligent Design And The Return Of The God Hypothesis

Dr. Stephen Meyer directs the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute in Seattle. He returns to Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson to discuss his newest book,  Return of the God Hypothesis: Three Scientific Discoveries That Reveal the Mind Behind the Universe. In this wide-ranging and often mind-bending interview, Dr. Meyer explains the God Hypothesis; makes his continuing and evolving case for intelligent design; describes how Judeo-Christian theology gave rise to science; discusses why the discovery of DNA is actually an enigma, as its existence cannot be explained by natural selection; and more.

Essay Paper on Is There a God

It goes without saying that the existence of God is a subject that has occupied schools of philosophy and theology for thousands of years. I believe in God and creation and I think that there are many examples that prove that God did really exist. They constitute my personal theory which I strongly adhere to.

First of all, the Bible says, “in the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth”. The Bible tells us that God was the cause of creation. Jesus did what people can’t do, he performed miracles. He healed people…blind, crippled, deaf, even raised a couple of people from the dead. He had power over objects…created food out of thin air, enough to feed crowds of several thousand people. He performed miracles over nature…walked on top of a lake, commanding a raging storm to stop for some friends. People everywhere followed Jesus, because he constantly met their needs, doing the miraculous. He said if you do not want to believe what I’m telling you, you should at least believe in me based on the miracles you’re seeing. God views my relationship with him as permanent. In fact, referring to all those who believe in him, Jesus Christ said of us, “I know them, and they follow me, and I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand.”

I have read the Bible, and I’m convinced that God does exist. I feel him in my heart, and you can feel him too if you’ll just ask him into your life. “For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son into the world, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish from the earth.” If God exists, then we are accountable to this God. The universe may have meaning and purpose. Moreover, our own existence may not cease at physical death.

There’s no doubt that in my personal theory I rely on some of the main arguments for God’s existence. According to the cosmological argument for God’s existence, the world could not exist on its own so there must have been a first cause that brought it into being. I believe that this first cause is God. In other words, the universe could not just exist on its own—someone or something must have made it. And this perfect cause of the universe is God.

According to the teleological argument, the universe is too complex to be the product of random chance. For instance, the celestial bodies move with perfect accuracy in their orbits. Human bodies, too, are especially complex. Relying on the teleological argument, I came to a conclusion that there’s just no way all this complexity could just happened. I strongly believe that God must have created it all.

What is more, without God morality would be impossible. There must be a Lawgiver (God) who originates and stands by the moral law. A universal moral law cannot exist accidentally. There must be a basis behind it, which is God. According to this view, every person is born with an inherent understanding of right and wrong. Everyone, for example, understands that murdering an innocent person is wrong. Everyone realizes that helping a drowning person is right. Where did this internal understanding of right and wrong come from? I’m convinced that this understanding comes from God. He was the one to put it into the hearts of every person…
