Some Stood Firm:

Excerpts from the Magazine: “America: Super Power of Prophecy: From “Family Heritage Books” written by Ellen G. White texts from the “Great Controversy”

Some Stood Firm: Satan’s efforts to destroy the church of God was in vain. Therefore he laid his plans to war more successfully against the government of God by planting his banner in the Christian Church. Now he endeavors to gain by deception what he could not gain by force. Persecution ceased and in its stead were substituted allurement of temporal prosperity and worldly honor. Idolaters received part of the Christian faith by accepting Christ but with no conviction of sin and no repentance. They had no change of heart. They proposed all Christians unite on the platform of belief in Christ.

Loyal and True: Some Stand Firm: Now the true church was in fearful peril. Some stood firm but others were in favor of yielding or modifying features of their faith. Satan was insinuating himself into the church for the purpose of corrupting their faith and turn their minds against the Word of truth. Most of the Christians, at last, consented to lower their standards and a union was formed between Christianity and Paganism. They professed to be Christians and united to the Church but clung to their idolatry. The Christian religion became corrupted and the Church lost her purity and power. There were some however who were not misled. They still maintained their fidelity to the Author of Truth. They worshiped the One and Only God. Still, Satan exulted that he had succeeded in deceiving so large a number of the followers of Christ that he brought his power to bear more fully on these and inspired them to persecute those who remained true to the One True God.

Some Stand Firm: The Desperate Struggle: These apostate Christians uniting with half Pagan companions directed their warfare against the most essential features of the doctrines of Christ. It required a desperate struggle for those who would be faithful to stand firm against deception and abomination introduced into the Church. The Bible was not accepted as the standards of faith. The doctrines of religious freedom were termed heresy and its upholders were hated. After a long and severe conflict, the faithful saw that separation was an absolute necessity. They dare not tolerate errors fatal to their own soul and set an example that would imperil the faith of their children and their children’s children. They felt that even peace would be too dearly purchased at the sacrifice of principle.

Some Stand Firm: Great Darkness: The Apostle Paul foretold the great apostasy. He declared that the Day of Christ shall not come except there come a great falling away first and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped so that he as God sits in the temple of God showing himself that he is God. Furthermore, the Apostle warns his brethren the mystery of iniquity does already work: 2 Thessalonians 2: 3,4, and 7.--- Even at that time he saw creeping into the Church errors that would prepare the way for the development of the Papacy. Little by little the mystery of deception carried forth its deceptive and blasphemous work and the customs of heathenism found their way into the Christian Church.

Some Stand Firm: Compromise: Satan’s Masterpiece: The spirit of compromise and conformity was restrained for a time by the fierce persecution. But as persecution ceased and Christianity entered the courts of Palaces and Kings the Church laid aside the humble simplicity of Christ and His apostles. Now the works of corruption rapidly progressed. Paganism doctrines, ceremonies, and superstitions were incorporated into the faith and worship of the professed followers of Christ. This compromise between paganism and Christianity resulted in the “Man of Sin” foretold in prophecy. That gigantic system of false religion is a masterpiece of Satan’s power; a monument of his effort to seat himself upon the Throne to rule the earth according to his will. It is one of the leading doctrines of Romanism that the Pope is the visible head of the universal Church of Christ invested with supreme authority over bishops and pastors in all parts of the world. He has been styled “Lord God the Pope” and has been declared infallible. He demands the homage of all men. But those who fear and reverence God know Luke 4:8: “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and Him only shalt thou serve.”

Some Stand Firm: Prohibiting the Bible: Satan knew that the Holy Scriptures would enable man to discern his deception and withstand his power. In order for Satan to maintain his sway over men and establish his authority of the papal, he must keep them in ignorance of the Scriptures. For hundreds of years, the circulation of the Bible was prohibited. The detector of error having been removed Satan worked according to his will. The prophecy had declared that the papacy was to think to change times and laws. (Daniel 7:25) To avoid converts from heathenism a substitute for the worship of idols, the adoration of images and relics was gradually introduced into Christian worship. The decree of a General Council finally established the system of idolatry. As Protestant Reformer Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses upon the door of the Church of England he said this: “Here I stand! unless I am convinced by the testimony of Scripture I can not and will not retreat! For it is unsafe for a Christian to speak against his conscience! Here I stand! I can do no other! God help me! AMEN!”

Some Stand Firm: Seeking Freedom in America: Proverbs 4:18: “The path of the just is a shining light that shines more and more unto the perfect day.” It was the desire for liberty of conscience that inspired the Pilgrims to brave the perils of the long journey across the sea to endure the hardships and the danger of the wilderness and with God’s blessings to land on the shores of America, the foundation of a mighty nation. Later, the next century as the tidings spread through Europe of a Land where everyone might enjoy the fruit of his own labor and obey the convictions of his own conscience, thousands flocked to the Eastern Shore. The Bible was held as the foundation of faith; the source of wisdom and the charter of liberty. Its principles were diligently taught in the home, in the school; manifest in thrift, intelligence; purity, and temperance. The principles of the Bible were the surest safeguards of national greatness. The world wondered with peace and prosperity of a church without a Pope and the State without a King! But the union of the Church with the States ...be the decree never so slight, while it may appear to bring the world nearer to the Church, does, in reality, bring the Church nearer to the world. Psalm 2: “Why do the heathen rage and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against His anointed saying: “Let us break their bands asunder and cast away their cords from us. He that sits in the heavens shall laugh. The Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall He speak unto them in His wrath and vex them in His sore displeasure! “ verse 10: Be wise ye kings. Be instructed ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son lest He be angry and ye perish from the way. Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him. The End
