AG Barr: Democrat-led ‘Resistance’ undermines ‘duly elected government’Democrats love to use the phrase “rule of law” when attacking Donald Trump, but our attorney general has just flipped the script.
During a recent appearance at the National Lawyers Convention of the Federalist Society, Barr accused Democrats of the “systematic shredding of norms and the undermining of the rule of law,” and it may be that they are the ones who will soon be exposed for their own criminal wrongdoing.
Founders’ intent
There is a reason our Framers and Founders created the presidency. This was done to have one individual elected by the people who could make decisions on their behalf, in split seconds when necessary, to protect this country and its citizens.However, when Trump was elected, that all went out the window. “Immediately after President Trump won the election, opponents inaugurated what they called “The Resistance,” and they rallied around an explicit strategy of using every tool and maneuver available to sabotage the functioning of his Administration,” he said.
“The fact of the matter is that, in waging a scorched-earth, no-holds-barred war of ‘Resistance’ against this Administration, it is the Left that is engaged in the systematic shredding of norms and the undermining of the rule of law.”
That office is supposed to be separated from the legislative branch of our government, not enslaved by it. Barr explained:
From these practical experiences, the Framers had come to appreciate that, to be successful, the Republican government required the capacity to act with energy, consistency, and decisiveness. They had come to agree that those attributes could best be provided by making the Executive power independent of the divided counsels of the Legislative branch and vesting the Executive power in the hands of a solitary individual, regularly elected for a limited term by the Nation as a whole. As Jefferson put it, ‘[F]or the prompt, clear, and consistent action so necessary in an Executive, unity of person is necessary.”
Not anymore
Our presidents have typically been allowed to carry out their official duties without being so blatantly obstructed by Congress — up until now.Sure, there is always pushback on certain issues, but you can look back at the presidency of Barack Obama to see the significant autonomy granted to the office.
That all changed when Donald Trump was elected. Democrats in the House are not only seeking to remove him from office, but they are blocking every move he makes, regardless of how beneficial it would be to the American people.
As Barr notes in his speech, the current action of Congress is setting a dangerous precedent for our Republic. They are, in essence, negating the office of the presidency, thereby negating the voice of the American public.
The damage wrought by this tactic will go far beyond the Trump years, and we all know it. From this point forward, every move of every president can and will openly be challenged simply out of revenge and anger.
Barr summed the argument up by saying, “in so many areas, it is critical to our Nation’s future that we restore and preserve in their full vigor our Founding principles. Not the least of these is the Framers’ vision of a strong, independent Executive, chosen by the country as a whole.”
