President Donald Trump kicked off his 2020 re-election bid with a rally typical of the many he has held since taking office, having never fully exited campaign mode despite his 2016 victory, his scandal-dogged administration constantly on the defensive.
Tuesday night's rally in Orlando, Florida was, however, a bigger affair than usual, featuring First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and Second Lady Karen Pence, who introduced the president at the event.
The 20,000-strong crowd inside the Amway Center were adorned with the iconic red "Make America Great Again" campaign hats and other Trump campaign merchandise. Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the U.S.A." rang out, as it always does when Trump appeared.
During his characteristically wide-ranging and meandering speech, much of it off script, Trump talked up his custodianship of the American economy, his cuts to business regulations, and foreign policy actions such as walking away from the Iran nuclear deal.
"Our patriotic movement has been under assault from the very first day," Trump said, referring to the Mueller investigation and multiple other probes into him, his campaign, administration, and business dealings, as well as intense scrutiny in the media.
"We accomplished more than any other president has in the first two and a half years of a presidency and under circumstances that no president has had to deal with before."
He also dedicated sections of his speech to attacking his 2016 rival for the presidency, Hillary Clinton, including her "big mistake" in calling his supporters "deplorables," an insult many Trump fans proudly adopted as a label.
The president told his supporters that his campaign had a big decision to make: Updating the "Make America Great Again" slogan—which Trump called "possibly the greatest theme in the history of politics"—for 2020.
"So now I say we've made America great again, but how do you give up the number one—call it theme, logo, statement—in the history of politics for a new one? But, you know, there's a new one that really works, and that's called 'keep America great,'" Trump said.
Rally attendee Michelle Best, 36, of Brandon, Florida, told The Washington Post she thinks Trump's abrasive style is "brilliant."
"He knows how to irritate people. He's very intelligent. He knows how to get to them," Best told The Post. "Trump knows weaknesses, and he knows how to exploit them. Is he the nicest guy? Nice doesn't get things done. I don't want a nice president. I want a president that gets things done. And he's getting things done."
