Ilhan Omar may face a primary challenge for her congressional seat

Democrats appear to finally be waking up regarding the damage Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is doing to their party.

There are now rumors that Minnesota Democrats are strongly considering running a primary challenger against Omar for the 2020 election.

Unprecedented Move

Omar hit the ground running and has continued to stir the pot nearly every day she has been in office. Oddly enough, her extremism is nothing new, it was just kept under the radar when she was serving in her State House.

Now that she is on Congress, every action she takes and every word she says is on an amplified stage. Even for liberals, some of her stances have proven to be so extreme, some party members can no longer support her.

Minnesota State Rep. Ron Latz (D), who represents part of Omar’s district, told the Hill, “There’s definitely some buzz going around about it, but it’s more a buzz of is anyone talking about finding someone to run against her than it is saying they’re going to run against her or contemplate it.”

“There’s definitely talk about people wanting to run against her,” he added.

Waning Local Support

Omar’s district is called home to the largest Somali refugee population in the state. As such, we might expect the support among that community to remain loyal to her, but that is not the case either.

While they are not ready to cut ties just yet, there is some obvious frustration there. Community activist Omar Jamal stated, “This is up to Ilhan Omar.”

He continued, “She has really spoken in a very dangerous way, and it’s going to be up to her to reach out to people and fix this.”

He appears to realize that in this political climate, it’s not helpful in any way for these immigrants to have such a controversial representative.

This should serve as a wakeup call to Omar’s fellow representatives in the House.

However, while some Democrats censured her initial remarks, we have seen far more support for the freshman congresswoman among her fellow House members than we have seen outrage, especially among the newest members of the House.

How Political Recalls Work

A political recall is the process by which a public official is removed from office before his or her term is over. The recall process is designed to provide a check on the sovereign power of elected officials. If officials fail to represent the will of their constituency, then the voters have the power to take back their vote through a recall election.

Citizens can't recall federally elected officials like members of the U.S. Congress or the President. But at least 29 states have rules on the books for the recall of elected local officials like mayors, school board members, and county commissioners, and 19 states allow for the recall of state elected officials like state legislators and governors [source: National Conference of State Legislators].

Every state that allows recalls has its own set of rules governing the recall process. Before a politician can be yanked from office, there are petitions to be signed, signatures to be certified and special elections to be organized.
