NEW JERSEY GUN LAWS AFFECT POLICE OFFICERS

The New Jersey governor passed a series of gun control laws which infringed upon civilians' and veterans' second amendment rights while failing to consider how such would affect law enforcement.

Dems Encounter Issue With Gun Control As New Law Affecting Police Officers

In passing the ‘high-capacity’ magazine ban, legislators failed to consider off-duty officers.

In his pledge to be “a leader in the fight for common-sense gun safety,” New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a series of gun control laws on June 13, including one which now limits civilians to magazines capable of receiving 10 or fewer rounds of ammunition. Several weeks later, it was revealed that retired law enforcement officers would be exempt from the ‘high-capacity’ magazine ban but not veterans.
Unsurprisingly, this has become an issue not only for would-be armed citizens and veterans but also active-duty police officers, who may understandably be carrying a gun with a magazine with at least a 10-round receiving capacity. Only just now realizing this technicality in failing to implement gun control safety measures, respective legislators are now working to “correct the oversight.” While it is obnoxious that it has reached this point, at least the recent technical concern may hopefully help gun-grabbing Democrats wake up about the inconvenience and indisputable danger of gun control.
The law in question, A2761, mandated that unless a retired law enforcement officer, gun owners would have 180 days to relinquish themselves of ownership of any associated magazines.
Now, legislators have identified a technicality which clearly affects law enforcement officers.
Luis Bordi on behalf of the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police addressed this issue, noting that “most police service weapons use magazines containing between 12 and 17 rounds” and that “police officers are never completely off the clock.”
Bordi continued that even when not on duty, police officers are “required to act depending on what happens in front of them, and they need to be able to protect themselves and the community.”
Naturally, such could involve a firearm if an off-duty officer encounters a situation which warrants lethal force. However, under the recently imposed law, officers would either be unarmed and unable to act accordingly or otherwise be illegally in possession of their previously legal magazines.
The brilliant democrats behind the infringing legislation are now apparently working to “correct the oversight,” according to New Jersey Senator Loretta Weinberg.
Only recently, Weinberg admitted, that “her legislative office become aware of concerns over how the new law might affect active-duty officers.”
The response, issued on Monday in the form of measure S-2846, now permits off-duty officers to possess guns carrying over 10 rounds of ammunition but less than 17, “provided it is used with the officer’s service firearm issued by the officer’s employer.”

While it has not been revealed whether the recently implemented law had any negative impact on police officers so far, as it is still within the 180-day period, it could have outrageously turned the very individuals who enforce the law into criminals themselves.
Of course, this has been the major concern pertaining to the recent magazine limitation, as only those who follow the law will be affected.
While advocating for additional state firearm laws, Governor Murphy invited a Parkland shooting survivor, Alfonzo Calderon, to give a speech in which he focused on one word: ‘change.’
Change, the student from Marjory Stone Douglas High School, claimed, is what would save lives and prevent gun violence. However, as has been recently seen, such ‘change’ is now required to be changed back or otherwise amended.
Yet the positive side to this situation is that Murphy and fellow New Jersey Democrats have successfully embarrassed themselves while also illustrating one of the biggest problems to anti-gun laws: that they simply increase the chances of committing firearm possession crimes as the result of legislative loopholes.
While police officers’ right to legally bear arms is thankfully being addressed, such attention has already arisen pertaining to veterans; however, legislation defending their second amendment rights has yet to be proposed.
Already this has been an issue in Millstone Township, New Jersey when a veteran’s son made the grave mistake of mentioning in a liberal’s child’s presence that his father owns two firearms.
Interestingly, only one day after Murphy had passed the series of laws, on June 14, the state attempted to seize Army veteran Leonard Cottrell Jr. of his small self-defense collection.
The concern addressed the fact that his son and a classmate were discussing school shootings and how they would attempt to survive one. Yet this was somehow misinterpreted as a threat and the police raided Cottrell’s home, perhaps expecting to find the firearms in the child’s room.
Of course, they were not stored in such an irresponsible manner, yet the police insisted that Cottrell at least temporarily relocate his guns elsewhere while the undeniably pointless “‘investigation’ continued.”
Cottrell, who risked his life in Iraq, subsequently disarmed despite his veteran status and there being virtually no threat. Yet he could have also been subjected to New Jersey’s also infringing A1217 law which issues extreme risk protection orders following liberal, gun-fearing hysteria.
Ironically, the officers who attempted to seize Cottrell’s guns are now facing similar second amendment infringements which is unfortunate proof that liberal governments, deny as they may, insist on seizing all Americans’ guns, whether of civilian, law enforcement, or military status.

One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors. -- Plato (429-347 BC)
