Rep. Devin Nunes: The left’s calls to impeach Trump have ‘boomeranged’ on them

The Democrats are walking into their own trap, says House Republican Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.).

Rep. Nunes told Sean Hannity Wednesday that the left’s incessant calls for Trump’s impeachment could come back to hurt them now that evidence of liberal bias in the intelligence community is coming to light. Instead of the president, it’s his opponents who could be at risk.

Is it time for President Trump to leave the White House?

Nunes authored the FISA abuses memo which alleges that the investigations into Trump may have been political in origin.

Left set its own impeachment trap

“The Left has continued to say this is Watergate and Trump’s going to be impeached,” Nunes said.

“Now this has effectively boomeranged on them,” Nunes continued. “Half of the American people now know that the other party, the Democrats, appear like they weaponized, to some degree, the intelligence services, by using the foreign intelligence surveillance apparatus in this country to go and target the opposition campaign is totally unacceptable.”

Nunes was referring to the questionable means by which the Obama intelligence community obtained FISA warrants to spy on Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

Nunes and other Republican lawmakers drafted a memo describing the alleged abuses of the FISA courts by the Obama administration against the Trump campaign. That memo, released last month, accused the Obama administration’s intelligence community of starting a politicized investigation into the Trump campaign using the infamous Christopher Steele dossier, most of which was unverified.

On Wednesday, Inspector General (IG) Michael Horowitz announced an internal investigation into the alleged FISA abuses.

Need Justice documents “like yesterday”

House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) recently subpoenaed the documents concerning those alleged FISA abuses, as well as the FBI’s investigations into Hillary’s emails and the firing of former Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. Nunes said those documents needed to be released “like yesterday.”

If they’re not released? Nunes said if the subpoena is ignored, “We should move quickly to contempt [of Congress] and then we should move to impeachment.”

The FBI has doubled its staff responding to the requests to quicken the pace of disclosing records.

Pressure mounts for second Special Counsel
Nunes’ urgent message comes as Republicans have escalated demands for Jeff Sessions to appoint a second Special Counsel to investigate the FBI’s handling of the Hillary email investigation. Horowitz has been conducting an internal investigation into the FBI’s handling of that investigation and is expected to conclude in the next few months.

Republicans argue the IG lacks the full prosecutorial authority to conduct a thorough investigation. President Trump has criticized Sessions for leaving the investigation to Horowitz.

Why is A.G. Jeff Sessions asking the Inspector General to investigate potentially massive FISA abuse. Will take forever, has no prosecutorial power and already late with reports on Comey etc. Isn’t the I.G. an Obama guy? Why not use Justice Department lawyers? DISGRACEFUL!

McCabe’s firing

In his letter to Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein, Goodlatte noted that the timing of McCabe’s firing necessitated that the subpoena include documents on that decision.

“This recommendation [to fire McCabe] appears to be based, at least in part, on events related to the investigation surrounding Secretary Clinton’s private email server,” Goodlatte wrote. “Accordingly, the subpoena additionally covers all documents and communications relied upon by FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility in reaching its decision to recommend the dismissal of former Deputy Director McCabe.”

The Nunes memo stated that McCabe testified that “no surveillance warrant would have been sought” without the Steele dossier.

Congressional Republicans should do everything they can to get those documents. We need total transparency on how the FBI handled these investigations. There’s no reason to settle for less.
