Why we published this Book: American School children and college students today are being subjected to what we call the “Liberal History Lesson.” ...which goes something like this: 

America, say liberals, was a product of the enlightenment which was a rejection of Christianity. America, say liberals, was founded primarily by deists, not by Christians. The Constitution, say liberals, and particularly the First Amendment to the constitution erects a so called “wall of separation between church and state” that can not and must not be transgressed in any way. Moreover, say liberals, the government can not in any way support or favor religious faith. This philosophy, this misreading of American History; this mistaken interpretation of our Constitution has led to a relentless assault on America’s religious institutions and traditions by our educational system, the courts and throughout our popular culture. This little Booklet, “One Nation Under God” corrects the “Liberal History Lesson” and provides a powerful refutation to court rulings banning prayer from public schools; prohibiting the “Ten Commandments” from being posted in government buildings; outlawing nativity scenes, and other religious displays from public places.

#11) Declaration of Independence:
On July 4,1776, the delegates of the Continental Congress formally declared our national independence from Great Britain. Here are the words of the Declaration of Independence: “When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth the separate and equal station in which the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God entitle them: ... “We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among them are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. .... “We, therefore, the representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions.... and for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

#12)Alexis De Tocqueville:

Alexis De Tocqueville was the famous 19th century French Statesman Historian and social philosopher. He traveled to America in the 1830’s to discover the reason for the incredible success of this new nation. He published his observations in his classic two volume work--”Democracy in America.” He was especially impressed by America’s religious character. Here are some startling excerpts from Tocqueville’s great work: “Upon my arrival in the United States the religious aspect of the country was the first thing that struck my attention, and the longer I stayed there, the more I perceived the great political consequences resulting from this new state of things. In France I had almost always seen the spirit of religion and the spirit of freedom marching in opposite directions. But in America I found that they were intimately united and that they reigned in common over the same country. religion in America must be regarded on the foremost of the political institutions in that country. For if it does not impart a taste for freedom it facilitates the use of it. Indeed, it is in the same point of view that the inhabitants of the United States themselves look upon religious beliefs.”

#13) A Matter of the Heart:
I do not know whether all Americans have a sincere faith in their religion. Who can search the human heart? But I am certain that they hold it to be indispensable to the maintenance of Republican Institutions. This opinion is not peculiar to a class of citizens or a party...but it belongs to the whole nation and every class of society! In the United States the sovereign Authority is religious. There is no country in the world where the christian religion retains a greater influence over the souls of men than in America, and there can be no greater proof of its utility and its conformity to human nature than that its influence is powerfully felt over the most enlightened and free nation on the earth. -- In the United States the influence is not confined to the manners but it extends to the intelligence of the people. christianity, therefore reigns without obstacles ...by universal consent. I sought for the key to the greatness and genius of America in her harbors....in her fertile fields and boundless forests...in her rich mines and vast world commerce; her public school system and her institutions of learning...I sought for it in her democratic congress and her matchless Constitution. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpit flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power...America is great because America is good. If America ever ceases to be good...America will cease to be great.

#14) Morality is the Security of Liberty:

The safeguard of morality is religion and morality is the best security of law as well as the surest pledge of freedom. The Americans combine the notions of Christianity and liberty so intimately in their minds that it is impossible to make them conceive one without the other. Christianity is the companion of liberty in all its conflicts---the cradle of its infancy, and the Divine source of its claims. Tocqueville gives this account of a court case in New York: “while I was in America, a witness who happened to be called at the assizes of the County of Chester (state of New York) declared that he did not believe in the existence of God or in the immortality of the soul. The judge refused to hear his evidence on the grounds that the witness had destroyed beforehand all confidence of the court in what he was about to say. The newspapers related that fact without any other comment. The New York Spectator on August 23,1831 relates the facts in the following terms: “The Court of Common Pleas of Chester, New York, a few days since, rejected a witness who declared his disbelief in the existence of God. The presiding judge remarked that he had not before been aware that there was a man living who did not believe in the existence of God. This belief constitutes the sanction of all testimony in a court of justice. There was no case in a Christian country where a witness had been permitted to testify without such belief.”

#15) Benjamin Franklin:
Benjamin Franklin was one of America’s famous and influential founding fathers. He was also a scientist, an author, and a printer. He founded the University of Pennsylvania,signed the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution, and was Governor of the state of Pennsylvania. As governor, Franklin, in 1748, proposed a day of fasting and prayer for Pennsylvania. “It is the duty of mankind on all suitable occasions to acknowledge their dependence on the Divine Being...that Almighty God would mercifully interpose and still the rage of war among the nations. ...That He would take this Province under His protection, confound the designs and defeat the attempts of its enemies, unite our hearts and strengthen our hands in every undertaking that may be for the public good and for the defense and security in this time of danger.” Here are some noteworthy excerpts from Franklin’s autobiography: “I never doubted,for instance, the existence of the Deity, that He made the world and governed it by His Providence, that the most acceptable service of God was the doing good to man; that our souls are immortal; that all crime will be punished and virtue rewarded, either here or hereafter.----These I esteem the essentials in every religion and being found in all the religions we have in our country. I respect them all, though with different degrees of respect. I found them more or less mixed with other articles, which without any tendency to inspire, promote, or confirm morality. Several were principally to divide us and made us unfriendly to one another.” --- This respect of all induced me to avoid all discourse that might tend to lessen the good opinion another might have of his own religion and as our Province increased in people, and new places of worship were continually wanted and generally erected by voluntary contribution, my mite for such purpose, whatever may be the sect, was never refused.
