This admitted lack of direction on testing does not prevent the National Training leaders from blindly thrashing about to develop intern programs with the National Institute of Mental Health, wealthy foundations, and cooperating businesses and industries. Collaboration between the National Training Laboratories and University Centers in developing “change agents” on the campuses is also gaining momentum. the long range plan is to develop new techniques in their own laboratories and in high schools and schools of education where “change agents” skills and understanding are seen as part of the professional role into which students are developing. This will be done by group guidance and counseling, in which self analysis will be the objective.

An insight into Sensitivity Training is indicated in the National Training Laboratories official magazine which relates the thoughts of the leftist professor Staughton Lynd, who has written a book titled “Intellectual Origin of American Radicalisism.” He sees the New Left in the United States as inspired by the ideas which antedate Marx, and Lenin. they express man’s allegiance to the inner light and are as humanitarian as the golden rule. These ideas dating from then American Revolution in 1776 were operative in the student revolt in 1968. Staughton Lynd says: “The purpose of society is not to protect it but it is for the fulfilment of the needs of living human beings. Good citizens have the right and duty, not only to overthrow incurably oppressive government, but before that point is reached, to break particularly oppressive laws. We owe this ultimate of allegiance, not to this nation, but to the world.
#7) The group called Synanon:
Leaders of the New Left, such as Lynd, express a social ideal similar to that of a T-group participant’s elation following an experience at the National Learning Laboratories. It is to create new institutions which will counter the impersonality, dehumanizing, and unresponsiveness of those now in existence. If there is a hidden utopia it is that of a small group of equals meeting together in mutual trust and respect to work out their common destiny. In America we have such a group. Synanon in California was founded as a ‘drug addict” cure center, it now has people who remain in the center as permanent residents or employees, too emotionally crippled to cut the psychological umbilical cord, so say its critics. The leader of Synonym says that the people who left their group are doomed if not already destroyed. For him, the way of Synanon, is the only way. He looks confidently toward the future when millions of people the world over will have adopted it.
#8) Critics of Sensitivity Training:
There is a growing criticism of the goals and methodology of sensitivity training. Outspoken Professor Gomberg of the University of Pennsylvania, maintains that there is no hard evidence of benefits from this therapy management development most fashionable fad. He views industrial T-groups as mischievous. Another critic is George Ordearns, Professor of Business Administration of the University of Michigan. Learns attacks the training aimed at teaching motivation as prompting managers to probe into the personal privacy of others and practicing amateur psychology without having a useful effect and job performance as supervisory results. He further states that training groups are psychologically unfit to experiment with businesses or any other form of administration. (to be continued)
