Election fraud alleged in new study
People casting ballots from their grave is nothing new in Chicago but apparently, vote fraud is more widespread in this country than first suspected, according to a study conducted by Judicial Watch, a Washington-based legal watchdog group.
Released this month and called the Election Integrity Project, it concludes at least 3.5 million more people are on election rolls than are eligible to vote in this country.
Judicial Watch came to that conclusion after analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2011–2015 American Community Survey and statistics from the federal Election Assistance Commission which provided information from 38 states.
California in particular made up half of that 3.5 million with 1,736,556 “ghost voters.” Those ghost voters were concentrated in San Diego County where 810,966 more people voted than there are eligible voters. Los Angeles was almost as bad with 707,475 more votes cast than there are voters.
The report from Judicial Watch is not the first time voter fraud has been alleged. A study in 2014 in the online Electoral Studies Journal made a similar claim that in the 2008 and 2010 elections as many as 2.8 million illegal noncitizen votes were cast.
The study, which was authored by Jesse T. Richman and Gushan A. Chattha, both of Old Dominion University, and David C. Earnest of George Mason University, concluded that those votes were “enough to change meaningful election outcomes including Electoral College votes and congressional elections.”
A different study by Just Facts, a libertarian/conservative think tank, used data from a Harvard/You.Gov study that samples tens of thousands of voters every two years.
Their findings were that in 2008, as many as 5.7 million noncitizens voted in the election. In 2012, as many as 3.6 million voted.
Locally, El Dorado County does not seem to have the same problem, according to Bill Schultz who heads up the county Election Department.
Aware of the controversy, he said the county previously took steps to avoid the issue of ghost voters.
Schultz said El Dorado was one of the pilot counties to use the new system and has been operating under it for a year.
“So far we haven’t had many blips but people are still getting used to it,” he said.
“Los Angeles is still working on theirs. I can only imagine what they have to deal with when they have millions of voters. But the registrar of voters is working on it diligently. Other big counties are also aware of the problem and are working on it.”
