Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, was, before his elder statesman role, a writer, editor, and publisher of a newspaper. He understood the value of Freedom of the Press and Freedom of Speech and was well aware of the consequences of government authorities who believed they had the right and the power to exert too much control over either of these freedoms. Here is Benjamin Franklin’s famous quote on Freedom of Speech and the right to challenge governmental authority with that speech.

Although culturally ubiquitous, this characterization of the grizzled old hobo is profoundly misleading. In reality, most of America’s homeless people are young and healthy. Many attended college and work full-time jobs. They usually have permanent mailing addresses. Who are these people? Millennials.

In the wake of recent horrific shooting sprees, Donald Trump and other Republicans wishing to appear to “do something” have seized the purported “middle ground”: red flag laws. These laws would permit law enforcement or concerned family members to petition a court to remove firearms from individuals deemed dangerous after a summary judicial procedure.

Laws such as these enjoy popular support and a general perception of plausibility upon first glance. After all, there is a broad public consensus in favor of keeping guns out of the hands of convicted felons and other dangerous people.
