The New Church of England: Bite 26)

As told by Clarence Walker:

Sad and awful was the fate of these long-suffering Anabaptists. The world no sure place for hiding. Four hard persecutors were now hot on their trail. Surely, theirs was a trail of blood. During that same period, really earlier by several years, arose another denomination, not on the continent, but in England. However, this came not by the Reformers but by a real split and a division in the Catholics ranks. It was more like the division in 869 when the Eastern Catholics separated from Western Catholics and became known as the Roman Catholics and the Greek Catholics. England’s King Henry 7th had married Catherine of Spain but later fell in love with Ann Boleyn and wanted a divorce. Only the Pope could grant it and the Pope refused. Being King he thrust off the Pope’s authority and made himself the King of England by forming the New Church of England.

Bite 27) A Bloody Price to Pay:

As told by Clarence Walker:

The New Church of England was consummated in 1534-35. At that time there was no change in doctrine. It was simply a renunciation of the authority of the Pope. Therefore King Henry never became a Protestant. He died in the Catholic faith but the Catholic split at the time of the forming of the Church of England resulted in some very considerable changes. While a Reformation within the Catholic Church and under the Pope’s authority, as in the case of Luther and others was impossible, it did become possible after the division. The Reformers, Cranmer, Latimer, Ridley , and others then led in some marked changes. However, they and many others paid a bloody price for those changes when a few years later “Bloody Mary” came to the English throne and carried the New Church of England back under the Pope’s power. This fearful and terrible reaction ended with the strenuous and bloody five-year reign under Bloody Mary. 

Bite 28) A Short taste of Freedom:

As told by Clarence Walker:

While heads were going under the axe of Bloody Mary, hers went with them! The people had gotten a partial taste of freedom. Elizabeth, the daughter of Ann Boleyn, (for whom Queen Catherine was divorced from King Henry) became Queen. The Church of England again overthrew the Papal power and was again re-established. Thus, before the end of the 16th century, there were 5 established churches backed by the civil government. The Roman Church, the Greek Church, The Church of England, the Lutheran Presbyterian for Germany, and Calvin of France. All of these churches were bitter in their hatred of Anabaptists in their followings of the New teachings of the Apostle Paul and the Christians. Many thousands, including women and children, perished every day in the great unending persecutions. The Great Hope seemed, at that time, to be a bloody delusion.

Bite 29) The Hated Anabaptists:

As told by Clarence Walker:

The Peace Treaty of Augsburg in 1555 was to bring about peace between the Catholic split, but persecution did not cease with the hated Anabaptists (called Baptists today) in spite of all prior persecution and in spite of the awful fact that 50 million had already died martyr deaths, these Anabaptists still existed in great numbers. It was during this period that along with a European highway, 30 miles distance, stakes were set up every few feet on the side of the highway. The tops of the stakes were sharpened and on top of each stake was placed a gory head of a martyred Anabaptist. Human imagination can hardly picture a scene so awful. Yet a thing perpetrated according to reliable history, by a people who called themselves devout followers of the meek and lowly Jesus Christ. Let it be remembered that the Catholics did not regard the Bible as the sole rule and guide of life, but it was the rules decreed by the Church Council and the Infallible Popes.

Bite 30) Non Debatable:

As told by Clarence Walker:

There can never be a satisfactory debate between Catholics and Protestants, or between Catholics and Baptists, as there is no basis for a final agreement. The Bible alone can never settle anything as far as the Catholics are concerned. For an example: The question of Baptism? The Catholics do claim the final authority for the act is Biblical and teaches immersion but at the same time, this unerring Church has the perfect right to change the mode from immersion to sprinkling but the Church is the sole authority and no others have the right to make these changes! None but the infallible Papal Authority! I, Clarence Walker, quoting Dr. J.M. Carroll, as he stated in his last lecture: (the early 1900’s) “I am earnestly trying to do a very hard thing...to give to the people the main substance of two thousand years of history in just a few hours. It is well to call facts about the Bible during these awful centuries. The Bible was banned from the people.
