#7: History Repeats:

#1: Different Values: America had received a godly heritage from its Pilgrim fathers. Even from the 1700s and early 1800s most of the people were from a Protestant background. Although many were not true Christians most had respect for the Bible as the Word of God and the belief in its moral standards. Soon the immigration in the late 1800s and turn of the century and changes in American society greatly altered the nation's religious attitude.

#2: The Rise of Religious Cults: Between 1860 and 1910 almost 2 million immigrants entered the United States. Some were Catholic and some were Lutherans but many were Rationalists who exalted man's reasoning above the Revelation of God's Word. There were many different denominations. Cults arose which attracted religious Americans who lacked knowledge of Bible doctrine. The cults won over great followers but they also blinded people to the truth of God's Word.

#3: Doubting the Truth: Some theologians cast doubt on the truth of the Scriptures. their ideas began to break down the standards of many religious groups in America. Some people began to accept the notion that the Bible was just a good book written by men. Men began to think they had the right to examine Scripture and say what parts were accurate and which parts were in error. This liberalism led pastors to emphasize a social Gospel. Many quit teaching the True Gospel that repentance from sin and faith in Jesus Christ alone can give Salvation.

#4: The Agnostics: The focus of many American Churches was quickly changing from God's provision for man's eternal need to man's own ability to solve temporal needs. The agnostics rose up and even scoffed at the existence of God.... saying: "We don't know if God exists!" The most famous agnostic, Robert Ingersoll, traveled the country giving lectures. People paid to hear him mock true faith but many attended out of curiosity rather than agreement.

#5: Temperance Groups: About one hundred years ago the heavy use of alcohol had become a big problem in many areas of the country. Some immigrant groups were particularly heavy drinkers and their actions were very offensive to many others. Wherever alcohol was involved there was family abuse. Many religious Americans saw the need to correct the problem and formed temperance societies. Inter-denomination organizations formed by laymen crossed church boundary lines to fight the evil. The Young Men's Christian Association formed in England came to America. (YMCA) Sometimes known as the "Y"

#6: The Progressive ERA: Besides the growing spiritual needs America's growing and changing society was beset with many other problems. Some were too big for individuals to solve alone. More and more they looked to the government. Progressives sought to abolish corruption and unfair practices in government. The Progressives thought America's problems could be solved by the government. They thought the government was to be the minister of good and some did have moral aims. Corruption existed on all levels of government: City: State: and national. (So it is today as it was 100 years ago) Many Christians were swept up in the Progressive Movement which appealed to their desire for justice. Nevertheless, Christians became bedfellows with ungodly Liberals who wanted to use the government to perfect human society without God.

#7: History Repeats: A glaring lesson from this era of 100 years ago is the danger of following the latest popular ideas. Christians need to understand their history so they can know what is new and what is merely a rephrasing of old philosophy. A knowledge of history enables us to expose the fallacies of supposedly new arguments. Think of some of the popular political fads such as the candidate's promises to promote reality and righteousness. The Biblical understanding of human nature should alert us to this false advertising. (Look at what is legalized today.
