Jeff Sessions defends Trump against Democrats...

Jeff Sessions defends Trump against Democrat ‘show trial’

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions spoke out against the Democrats’ impeachment of President Donald Trump this week, calling it a “show trial” that is a shame to the nation. The former Alabama senator says that no evidence has emerged and that the Democrats should call the whole thing off.
“I’ve called it a ‘show trial,'” Sessions told Breitbart. “A show trial is when you decide you want to destroy somebody and then you have a spectacle of a trial to destroy them. But the decision is made before you start the trial, and I’m afraid that’s where we are.”

Sessions defends Trump against impeachment

After weeks and weeks of melodramatic build-up, the impeachment circus kicked off Wednesday with a public hearing that left many feeling underwhelmed. What Democrats had made out to be the political scandal of the century — perhaps even worse than Watergate — turned out to be an arcane, rather boring policy dispute involving Russian aggression towards Ukraine.

Perhaps wary of the whole charade falling apart, Democrats tried to sharpen up their message by specifically accusing Trump of “bribery” on Thursday. But the sensationalism of that charge hardly matches the complicated portrait painted so far by apparently disgruntled Swamp bureaucrats, who seem to have convinced themselves that the president answers to them, not the other way around.

Sessions said that the Democrats’ impeachment is an “abuse” of power that is “dangerous for our Republic,” and that Democrats are apparently shifting to the “bribery” message because “they have nothing else to say.” The Republicans said that the Democrats’ party-line vote on impeachment rules last month, in which only Democrats voted in favor while two joined the Republicans in voting against it, proved that the process was “totally partisan.”

“If Congress is not happy, they can conduct oversight and highlight what they disagree with. But you don’t impeach a president because you disagree with him on something,” Sessions said.

The former attorney general said that the Constitution sets a high bar for impeaching a president and that no evidence of impeachable wrongdoing has emerged. He criticized Democrats for forcing Congress to side-line important policy work for Americans to pursue President Trump in a “show trial” in which the verdict had already been reached, but he didn’t write off the possibility that the charade can still be called off if voters confront Democratic lawmakers.

Sessions hops into Senate race

Sessions waded back into national politics this month with the announcement that he is running for Senate. Sessions has been highlighting his loyalty to Trump in campaign aids and Fox News appearances, saying that he never wavered in his support of Trump and did not turn on him after Trump fired him, unlike many of Trump’s other former subordinates.

Sessions was the first Republican senator to endorse then-candidate Donald Trump, and his immigration agenda as a senator helped lay the groundwork for Trump’s “America First” platform. But as attorney general, Sessions became a target of Trump’s ire after recusing himself from the Russia probe, setting the stage for the Mueller investigation — a sin for which Trump and many of Trump’s supporters never quite forgave him.

That doesn’t change the fact that Sessions was one of Trump’s first and most loyal supporters — and he’s still backing him. Even without Trump’s endorsement, Sessions has said that he wants to work with Trump to make America great again since the America First agenda has stagnated in the Senate.

Despite his feud with Trump, Sessions is still very popular in his home state. A recent poll showed him leading the primary pack with the support of 36 percent of primary voters.

Unlike some people fired by the president, Sessions has shown humility in his role as the president’s subordinate and integrity in continuing to support him, despite some nasty attacks from the commander-in-chief. The puffed-up Swamp bureaucrats on Capitol Hill could learn a thing or two from this patriot.
