Thomas Paine:Political Activist - Anniversary Of His Death

Political activist
The Father of the American Revolution Thomas Paine ~ Common Sense

One of the most significant pieces of writing in American history was published on January 10, 1776. It was Thomas Paine’s essay Common Sense and is widely credited with helping to rouse Americans to the patriot cause. Its sales were extraordinary at the time; given the American population today, current-day sales would amount to some 60 million copies.

On the 210th anniversary of his death, this program examines the role and legacy of Thomas Paine, founding the father of the American Revolution. Born in Norfolk, the son of a Quaker corset maker, Paine went on to become one of the most influential men in history. Planting the seeds of revolution in the minds of Americans, farmers and intellectuals alike, Paine created prose that stirred the hearts of the fledgling United States and quickly became known as the voice of the common man. With a direct call to all Americans in 1776 to fight against British colonial rule and gain independence, the 18th-century revolutionary had a grand vision for society and a deep-seated belief in human freedom and integrity. Paine's ideas continue to inspire, not least his belief that "we have it in our power to begin the world over again".

Whatever Became of Thomas Paine?

Thomas Paine is back!!! "The time for talk is over. In an unprecedented moment of citizen response not seen in recent history since December 7, 1941 millions of your fellow Americans, neighbors, friends, relatives will bring their anger and their determination into the streets from Bakersfield to Bangor, Maine, from Indianapolis to Dallas in National Tea Parties protesting much more than taxation without representation. They are rising above their differences. They're marching not as republicans or democrats or black or white, or right-wing or left-wing. They're marching as Americans!"
