Chelsea Manning Jailed For Refusing To Testify Against WikiLeaks

Former US Army Intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning was jailed Friday for refusing to testify to a secret grand jury regarding WikiLeaks.

Manning was subpoenaed for the Eastern District of Virginia case in late January. This is the same district that has a sealed indictment against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Reagan-appointed US District Court Judge Claude Hilton ordered Manning to be jailed after Manning refused to testify according to ABC News.

Manning told Judge Hilton, “I will accept whatever you bring upon me.”

Manning was held in contempt of court after refusing to answer the questions from the grand jury.

Hilton said that Manning will remain jailed unless the former intel analyst is able to reach an agreement with the grand jury about WikiLeaks or until their work on the case is finished.

In 2010, Manning, then Private First Class Bradley Manning (later changed to Chelsea after announcing he identified as a she) stole State Department documents and smuggled them to WikiLeaks. The documents included secret international embassy reports which WikiLeaks made public.

Manning had been sentenced to 35 years in prison before Obama commuted his sentence from 35 to 7 years, and he was subsequently released from prison in 2017.
