PLEDGE TO BE AN ‘UMPIRE’

Brace yourself for a day of posturing blowhards, hollow platitudes, shameless hypocrisy, media outrage, and ridiculous protests.  The Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearing started this morning at 9:30 AM EST.

Day one did not feature any questions.  Instead, you were treated to a statement from Kavanaugh, followed by a litany of praise and grievances from both sides of the Senate Judiciary Committee.  It is, without question, going to be some of the worst theater anyone has seen since “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark” premiered on Broadway.

Brett Michael Kavanaugh is a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Kavanaugh has been nominated to become an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

We’ve already seen a group of Democrat Congressmen engaged in “silent protest” before their totally impartial proceeding began, and there was a gaggle of women engaged in Handmaid’s Tale cosplay greeting those who walked into the hearing room.  Our media, as grotesque as ever, is slobbering all over the story, and Twitter has gone mad with accusations, recriminations, and takes so hot they could out-shine the sun.

Brett Kavanaugh's path to the Supreme Court ran into protests today as Democrats complained about withheld documents and protesters interrupted his confirmation hearing with shouts before being dragged out by Capitol Police.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, the second highest-ranking Republican in the Senate, said the hearing had degenerated into "mob rule" within the first hour. Democrats said they were just seeking respect and accused Republicans of trying to push Kavanaugh through without a proper review.

Before the hearing began, Democrats on the committee gathered on the Supreme Court steps to complain about what they see as a lack of key documents about Kavanaugh's tenure as staff secretary for former President George W. Bush.

Before the hearing could even get started, Democrats called for it to be adjourned so thousands of pages of just-released documents could be reviewed. More than a dozen people in the audience stood and shouted intermittently their opposition to the nominee, interrupting the proceedings. About half the public seats in the hearing room were empty after the protesters were removed.

Part of Kavanaugh’s opening statement has already been released online.  It reads as follows:
“Over the past eight weeks, I have witnessed first-hand the Senate’s deep appreciation for the vital role of the American Judiciary. A good judge must be an umpire—a neutral and impartial arbiter who favors no litigant or policy…I don’t decide cases based on personal or policy preferences. I am not a pro-plaintiff or pro-defendant judge.  I am not a pro-prosecution or pro-defense judge. I am a pro-law judge.

…I have served with 17 other judges, each of them a colleague and a friend, on a court now led by our superb chief judge, Merrick Garland. If confirmed to the Court, I would be part of a Team of Nine, committed to deciding cases according to the Constitution and laws of the United States. I would always strive to be a team player on the Team of Nine.”

The hearing is scheduled to last four days. Tuesday was devoted to opening statements by committee members, three people have chosen to introduce Kavanaugh and, finally, the judge himself. Questioning will begin Wednesday and last at least two days. Friday will focus on panels of supporters and opponents.

If all goes according to Republicans' plans, the committee will vote later this month – almost surely along straight party lines – to send his nomination to the full Senate in hopes of getting him on the court by the Oct. 1 start of the 2018 term.

This multi-day circus will consume us ALL over the course of a week. …Then, Kavanaugh will be confirmed because Republicans have the votes and all of the hooplas is essentially meaningless.

Enjoy!
