HERE’S WHY 5 OF THE WT TOWER CONSPIRATORS HAVE NOT BE PUNISHED

Seventeen years after the most horrific attack on American mainland soil, five conspirators in the attack are still awaiting trial, thanks to complex legal issues and bad political choices.

Seventeen Years Later, Here’s Why Five Terrorist Conspirators Still Haven’t Been Sentenced

A combination of legal questions and political bungling have allowed many related to the 9-11 hijacking to sit in captivity rather than facing trial and sentencing.

Seventeen years ago, on this very day, the entirety of the United States came grinding to a halt as men, women, and children were glued to television sets around the country. Americans watched, as one, as two planes slammed into the World Trade Center in New York City, New York, and despaired as the towers crumbled under the hateful terrorist attack perpetrated on that day.

Seventeen years later, a number of people related to that horrific crime still await trial and sentencing in American courts. The wheels of justice haven’t turned slowly for these monsters; they’ve ground to a shocking halt. in fact, the reason for the delay involves Obama and his administration decided to suspend the cases, which to some people, seems deliberate.

Strangely, with all this time passed, five people, including the infamous mastermind of the attacks, are still awaiting trial for their roles in the attacks on that infamous day.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for all five.

However, constant changes of venue, concerns that evidence was coerced, and legal limitations involved in holding a trial in Guantanamo Bay, have all slowed the cases to the point where most citizens are not even aware that they’re ongoing.

Families of those who lost loved ones on that fateful day said that the legal limbo the cases are in has put them through hell.

Debby Jenkins, who lost her brother in the attack, said that it was outrageous how long the process is taking.

Alice Hoagland, the mother of Mark Bingham, who fought alongside his fellow passengers to retake United Flight 93, said that while she respects due process, she wants to see these men executed.

The United States government had captured all five of the conspirators, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, by 2003, due in no small part to the demand that they be found and the efforts of the Central Intelligence Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

For the next five years, the group of conspirators were shuffled around through CIA ‘black sites,’ where they were interrogated for information concerning the attack and other terrorist activities they were involved in or aware of.

In 2008, they were arraigned, and the case would likely have continued on, except Barack Obama and his administration decided to suspend the case when he entered the office.

In 2010, the Pentagon dismissed the charges, though they were dismissed without prejudice, which meant that the five could be charged with the same crimes again at some later date.

After the dismissal of the charges, then-Attorney General Eric Holder decided that it was somehow a good idea to attempt to hold the trial in a Manhattan court, which would have provided terrorists yet another excuse to strike the city.

The plan fell apart, and charges were refiled at the Gitmo military court in 2012 after the Obama administration and Eric Holder (who has signaled he may run for president in 2020) wasted four years.

The men were arraigned, once again, in 2012, in a military court.

In the six years since then, there have been constant hearings on the case, all concerning pretrial issues.

Defense attorneys for these five monsters have questioned whether evidence received through ‘enhanced interrogation’ was admissible in court, and have complained about the treatment they received while in captivity.

According to Karen Greenberg, director of the Center on National Security at Fordham Law School, the failure to put these people on trial is a “disservice to the citizens of this country.”

The most recent setback to the ongoing trial, now 17 years in the making, was the loss of the military judge who was overseeing it. He stepped down, and now his replacement, United States Marine Corps Colonel Keith Parrella, has to read 20,000 pages of transcripts, as well as an unknown number of pages of classified documents, in order to get up to speed.

There are more pretrial hearings scheduled for next year, which means that it is unlikely that there will be an actual start to any of the trials until 2020, at the very least.

Since 9/11, only two people have been sentenced in connection to the horrific attack on the WTC.

Zacarias Moussaoui was sentenced in 2005, after pleading guilty to six terrorism-related conspiracy charges. He was sentenced to serve six life sentences without the possibility of parole and is currently housed in a Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado.

Mounir el-Motassadeq was tried in Germany and was sentenced on 246 count of accessory murder, due to the financial assistance he provided the 9/11 hijackers.

He received a sentence of fifteen years in a German prison.

Even the defense attorneys representing the five awaiting trial have begun asking that the trial start, something generally unheard of in law.

Frankly, 2020 sounds like an optimistic prediction. The pretrial hearings could continue for years, while families still wait for the justice they’ve been denied for so long.
