Series 2: #8) The Pennsylvania Dutch by M. Malone 1971 School library Book:

Milton Hershey’s people were farmers. they sold their produce taking back roads to Harrisburg every week end. The Hersheys and the Snavelys lived in Lebanon Valley for over a hundred and fifty years. they came from Switzerland, among many others, for the religious freedom promised by William Penn. Milton was born in 1857 in the Fieldstone Farm house built by his great grandfather Isaac Hershey. Milton’s family were Mennonites, a religious group based on strict beliefs written in the Scriptures. they avoided worldly things such as card playing and theaters. they tried to avoid the troubles of that time. They refused to bear arms during the Civil War. Milton was 7 when he began attending school in a little one room school house in the village of Derry Church. the school master was his uncle Elias Hershey. Then when Milton was 9 his father Henry Hershey sold the family farm and moved his family to Lancaster County. There, at Old Harmony School at Nine Points, Lancaster, Milton loved singing hymns and he loved learning all the States and the capitols. When Milton was 11 his 5 year old sister died of scarlet fever. This was a heart breaking time.

Series 2: #9) Leaving School to Work:

Milton stayed in school till he was 14 and then got a job as an apprentice with Sam Ernst, who published a weekly newspaper but was fired soon after when he accidentally messed up a completed edition. Milton felt remorse at being fired at his first job. He wanted to please his father but he also felt greatly relieved when he was employed by Royer's Ice Cream Parlor and Garden. Royer's was well known for their fine candy and ice cream. So at 15 years of age Milton Hershey began to learn the confectioner’s trade. Four years later Milton had learned all he needed to know about the confectioners trade. He moved to Philadelphia and rented a small shop. Small and poor was the beginning but it was thrilling to be self employed. Soon an old friend from Lancaster came in to help deliver the candy and take care of the book accounting. then his mother and aunt Mattie joined him to help wrap the candy. This left Milton more time to work in the kitchen to dream up more ways to promote the business. Still with all the help there was trouble buying sugar because the price rose higher and higher and the orders did not bring in enough to pay for sugar.

Series 2) #10) Trouble in Paradise: School Book Malone 1971

The overworking and worry over debts made Milton Hershey ill for several weeks. His family and friends tried to help him hold on until one day his friend Harry Lebkicher who delivered the orders had an accident and upset the wagon. The people swarmed up and grabbed all the candy. when Milton heard what happened he said, “This is it! We can go no further!” Borrowing his uncle’s horses he moved the equipment back to Lancaster. He recorded every debt and vowed to pay everyone as soon as possible. Not long after returning to Lancaster Milton’s father Henry Hershey asked him to join him in Colorado seeking his fortune in the silver mines. Milton joined him and lived with his father for a short time but hard times hit the mining business too. Milton found a job in Denver as an assistant to a candy manufacturer. As time passed Milton knew he would not be happy until he had his own business again. After saving a few hundred dollars Milton went to New York to work as a laborer to pay back the debts he had made in Philadelphia. It was so humiliating when his equipment for candy making was confiscated for part of the debt. Still he vowed to pay back everything he owed. (to be continued) Back to Lancaster:
