Jim Nabors, famous as TV’s Gomer Pyle, passes away at 87
TV actor and singer Jim Nabors, known for his role as Gomer Pyle, has died. He was 87.

Nabors died at his home in Honolulu. His husband confirmed that the late actor’s health had been deteriorating over the past year.
Nabors received a liver transplant in 1994 after contracting hepatitis B. He moved to Hawaii in the 1970s, where he’d bought a 500-acre macadamia ranch.
“Everybody knows he was a wonderful man. And that’s all we can say about him. He’s going to be dearly missed,” said Cadwallader.

Nabors rose to prominence in the 1960s on “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.”

The character that brought Nabors lasting fame debuted on “Andy Griffith” in 1962. Pyle, a naive, bumbling gas pumper who popularized catch-phrases like “gawleee” and “shazam!”, was instantly popular.
Pyle’s success led to a spin-off series in 1964, the CBS comedy “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” The five-season show saw the good-natured Pyle leave his hometown behind for the Marines, where he clashed routinely with his stern drill sergeant, played by Frank Sutton.
“Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” ended in 1969. Nabors later starred in his own variety show, “The Nabors Hour”, which lasted two seasons, ending in 1971.

Nabors was also a talented baritone singer. His operatic voice surprised viewers who’d been accustomed to the meek, countrified Pyle.
When “The Nabors Hour” ended, the entertainer continued to find success in concert halls across the country. He released 28 albums over the course of his career.

Pyle sang “Back Home Again in Indiana” at the Indie 500 regularly, starting in 1972. Nabors also had roles in three films starring his friend, Burt Reynolds: “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”, “Stroker Ace” and “Cannonball Run II.”

His success has all the hallmarks of a Horatio Alger story. Nabors struggled early on, working as a typist for the United Nations in New York and then as a film cutter for a TV station in Chattanooga.
He got his big break after moving to LA in the late 50s, where he worked as a film cutter for NBC. He would sing nights at a cabaret in Santa Monica, the Horn, where his talent attracted the attention of Andy Griffith, who invited Nabors to audition for “The Andy Griffith Show.”
“I was up there on the stage the night that Andy Griffith came in,” Nabors said in 1965. “He said to me afterward, ‘You know somethin,’ boy? You’re good. I’m going to bring my manager around to see you.'”
Nabors married his longtime partner in Seattle in January 2013, shortly after gay marriage was legalized in Washington state. He was 82 at the time.
