I was wrong about Trump

 I recently wrote a column about why I believed Trump should not run in 2024. I was wrong. I allowed my distaste for Trump’s personality to override his virtues, which are considerable. Some people want Trump without his vices. I was among them -- until yesterday when I watched and listened to Tom Klingenstein’s speech titled “Trump’s virtues.”  It was masterful and shamed me that I did not make the distinction between Trump's character and his virtues, the former being deeply flawed, the latter being almost perfect. I need to man up in my defense of the former President's virtues. The speech was among the most pointed I have heard and deserves some exposure. Klingenstein says:

What is one thing all around us that few see?  Our history.  Every street name, neighborhood plat, and the winding trail is steeped with choices from the past whose meanings time has rendered invisible.  Our towns and cities are carved with roads named after prominent historical figures now forgotten.  Our hills, parks, and cemeteries honor many now unknown.  It is a peculiar fact of life that we at once stand on the shoulders of our ancestors and often don't look down to honor those whose choices lift us up.

What Happened To The Integrity Of Our Elected Officials, Part 1

One of the things that I have noticed since I have begun to study the politics of America is the severe downgrade of the quality of character in the people we send to Washington to ‘represent’ us.  They are all sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States and should always put America and the American people first. Most of the people that are in Washington do very little of either and mock the ones that do.

Most people pay no attention to what these elected officials do until what they’ve done affects their pocketbooks.  Usually, by then it’s too late. The damage is done and in Washington, it is very hard to undo anything.  Ronald Reagan once said that the closest thing to eternal life on earth is a government program.  To prove his point there was a half-cent tax that was implemented to pay the debt of WW I. That debt has long been paid but the tax is still there.

Romney began by claiming that Americans tend to be divorced from reality.
